CHUL HYUN AHN

Born in Busan, South Korea, in 1971, Chul Hyun Ahn is a sculptor whose work uses light, mirrors, and carefully constructed space to test the limits of visual perception. Rather than treating light as an end in itself, Ahn uses it to make space visible: repeated reflections open seemingly bottomless passages, fields, and voids within objects only inches deep. The result is at once architectural and psychological, turning physical boundaries into experiences of apparent infinity.

Ahn arrived at this language remarkably early. By his 2002 MFA exhibition at the Maryland Institute College of Art, he had abandoned painting for mirrored light constructions producing the illusion of infinite depth. He was among the earliest contemporary artists to develop this principle into a sustained sculptural practice, preceding the proliferation of infinity-mirror sculpture that followed. His work has since been presented at institutions including the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Delaware Art Museum, MACRO in Rome, and the Saatchi Gallery in London, and is held by the Harn Museum of Art and Borusan Contemporary.

Ahn's practice grew from an interest in geometric abstraction and the problem of creating depth on a flat surface. Mirrors offered a way beyond the canvas. His spaces have affinities with Op Art and Light and Space, yet their persistent concern with emptiness, contemplation, and the infinite gives them a distinctly meditative character informed by his Korean background.

Using LEDs and other light sources between mirrors and one-way mirrors, Ahn constructs precise systems of repetition within plywood, acrylic, concrete, and other housings. Light appears to recede far beyond the sculpture's actual dimensions, transforming a simple optical mechanism into an encounter with something immeasurable. What has since become a widely recognizable visual language began for Ahn as a fundamental question: how can a finite object contain the experience of infinite space?

Biography

 Chul Hyun Ahn was born in Busan, South Korea, in 1971 and studied painting at Chugye University for the Arts in Seoul. He moved to the United States in 1997, studying at Eastern Michigan University before earning his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2002. During his graduate studies, Ahn shifted from geometric painting toward the mirrored light constructions that would define his practice, using reflection to extend physical space into the illusion of infinity. Since then, his work has been exhibited internationally, including solo museum exhibitions at the Academy Art Museum, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center. His work is held in public and institutional collections including the Harn Museum of Art, Telfair Museums, Delaware Art Museum, and Palm Springs Art Museum. Ahn lives and works in Baltimore.
